Questions to ask a dog breeder before buying a puppy

The best questions cannot be answered with ‘vet checked’, ‘IKC registered’ or ‘family raised’ alone. Ask for names, dates, documents and examples that connect to this litter.

01

Ask about the parents

Why was this mating chosen? What are the sire and dam like in ordinary life? Which named health results apply, and what health or temperament issues exist in older relatives?

02

Ask about the first weeks

Where were the puppies born and raised? Which people, surfaces, sounds, handling and short separations have they experienced? How does the breeder assess each puppy’s fit?

03

Ask what happens after collection

Request the contract in advance. Clarify microchip ownership transfer, veterinary records, food, insurance timing, return support and what happens if your circumstances change.

Common questions

Quick answers

What answer should make me walk away?

A refusal to let you visit the declared premises, meet the dam, inspect matching records or take time to decide is enough reason to stop.

Should a breeder ask me questions too?

Yes. A responsible breeder should care about your home, routine, experience, plans and fit for the adult dog—not only whether you can pay.
